Well worth a visit for anyone traveling to the Asakura ruins or the surrounding region

点评：In late November 2025, I had some time before checking in at my inn during my visit to the Ichijodani Asakura Ruins, so I decided to stop by this museum. The Fukui Station Dinosaur Area Portal Site explains: “For a long time it was said that there were no dinosaur fossils in Japan. Then an Early Cretaceous crocodile fossil was discovered on a cliff of the Kitadani Formation, Tetori Group in Kitadani-cho, Katsuyama-shi in Fukui. In 1989, this discovery initiated the large-scale excavation of dinosaur fossils, which continues to this day.” Today, Fukui Prefecture is widely known as Japan’s Dinosaur Kingdom, with dinosaur statues found throughout the region. The museum itself opened in July 2000 as a natural history museum and is now in its twenty-fifth year. When we parked in the museum’s main parking lot, the immense building rose before us. Admission generally requires advance reservations, but on the day of our visit a sign along the road indicated that same-day tickets were available. It was just after a three-day holiday weekend, so we were able to enter without delay. Visitors enter on the third floor, descend by escalator to the first basement level, and then proceed upward to the third floor again after viewing the exhibitions on each level. The third floor houses the museum shop and restaurant. The exhibits cover the classification and evolution of dinosaurs, the history of excavations in Fukui, and many other topics—far more than one can take in within a few hours. It was an ideal place to spend the time before checking in at our inn, and I came away with a renewed appreciation for the depth of Fukui’s natural history. Anyone traveling to the Asakura ruins or the surrounding region would find the museum well worth a visit.
