Ocean breezes and stunning views add up to a great day trip
Santa Cruz Island的点评
点评：Located in the Pacific Ocean approximately 30 mi/48 km from Ventura Harbor, Santa Cruz Island is the largest (and most visited) body of land in Channel Islands National Park. My wife and I took a day trip here on a beautiful Saturday in late February 2025.
NOTE that the only way to reach Santa Cruz Island is by boat. If you don’t have access to a private vessel, you must go through Island Packers, who have several departures out of Ventura Harbor daily. It is strongly recommended that you buy your tickets online in advance, as their boats have limited seating and sell out frequently. The boat ride lasts about 1.5 hours each way.
Most of the boats disembark at Scorpion Harbor, from where visitors can pursue numerous activities, including hiking (which we chose), relaxing on the rocky beach, kayaking, picnicking and camping. NOTE that there is no food service on the island, so you have to bring your own food and beverages.
There were several highlights to our day trip. On the island the weather was beautiful, and we enjoyed the hike to Potato Harbor. We also saw a couple of adorable Island Foxes, which are only found on the Channel Islands. On the boat ride back to Ventura, we were joined by a large pod of playful dolphins, and later (to everyone’s surprise and delight) we saw a small pod of orcas.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Santa Cruz Island and can recommend it highly to our fellow National Park enthusiasts.
