点评:The National Museum of Forest Service History is a very special place and shouldn't be missed if you're visiting Missoula and this summer marks the opening of the long-awaited National Conservation Legacy Center (NCLC) as the centerpiece of this wonderful monument to the origins of conservation and the history of the US Forest Service (opens starting July 17, 2026).
The NCLC is an exhibit itself utilizing a variety of wood building materials and technologies from traditional timber framing to the mass timber walls and roof housing the collection of historic artifacts, documents, photographs and stories of the men and women who made this agency what it is. There are thirteen tree-like structures that support the mass timber panels that comprise the folded roof structure. Each one was framed utilizing a different species of wood from the US. Quite simply, there is no building quite like this one and it is not to be missed.
The NCLC sits in the center of a 31-acre site which includes a restored ranger cabin, a restored aerial retardant tanker plane that had its origins as a submarine hunter in the post-World War II era. You can stroll the conservation trail and if you're there at the right time, you may get an opportunity to see real pack animals and equipment still used in back country work.
There is something for everyone at this showcase to conservation and the agency who shaped and cared for the forests we all own as citizens of this great country.
