点评:I will be 60 this year so you can imagine in those years I have done, and seen so much. In March 2025 I was shown a Facebook page and told about a lady called Katherine, and the amazing work she does with elephants in Thailand. After watching many online videos we decided it would be amazing to stay at this elephant sanctuary and emailed Katherine regarding this, and within just a few weeks we had booked a 5 day stay at BLES for March 30th, 2026.
I spent a year planning flights, hotels, day trips, travel, and watched countless YouTube videos for ideas to build a full plan, as we decided to extend our 5 days to maximise our visit to Thailand to 18 days.
So fast forward to March 2026 and after a gruelling 26 hour travelling from Heathrow to Bangkok via Sweden we arrived at Sukhothai Airport, and here was to start the most life changing and inspiring 5 days of my life.
We were picked up at the airport by a BLES driver in a very nice air conditioned vehicle and driven to BLES which was around a 1 hour drive. As we turned off the main road in Sukhothai onto a dusty dirt track the excitement was immense to think we were going to be literally alongside elephants that were now living their very best lives. Let me make clear from the outset the reason we came to BLES was because it was a totally ethical sanctuary. No riding on the elephants, no washing them, or stroking them like pet dogs and this is what every sanctuary should now be setting out to do for these amazing animals.
On our arrival we were met by Katherine, and we were so fortunate that we were the only two people staying that week. During the next few hours we sat with Katherine, and it was like talking to a friend you had not seen for many years, the way Kat carries herself is immense and made us both feel very at ease, and we discussed so much. I was so excited, and if I am truly honest I just wanted to see an elephant, so in the afternoon we rode the transportation along with some of the staff, Katherine and of course Pancake the Dog.
We drove through the forest and suddenly we slowed down as to our left was this beautiful and amazing elephant feeding on some leaves, but just happy being able to go and eat wherever it wanted within the immense forestry. I was just in awe to sit on the truck and watch this stunning creature happily eating away. We moved on and just 5 minutes later we slowed again as we saw another elephant in the forest. We then stopped and set up a table and chairs for some lunch which had been brought for us to have in the forest, and sat next to a pool of water, and after being sat there for a little while our hearts melted as the latest additions to BLES suddenly appeared to bathe in the pool, Mama Rose and baby Precious. I watched as this tiny elephant stood by its mother's side copying her how to spray water over itself, and then tried to climb the bank of the pool with its little legs slipping and sliding but it was like a dream to think we were sat eating lunch and just 30 yards away was a baby and it’s mother.
I could write so much about our first day because it was simply magical, and you have to experience Katherine's manner to understand how knowledgeable and relaxed she is.
The next day we were firstly met with such a fantastic breakfast spread, each plate had flowers to decorate and it is small things like this that make such a difference. After watching how Katherine cares for the elephants in the medical area which again was just awe inspiring, we also prepared apples, rice and washed other fruit for the elephants snacks. That afternoon we were then taken into Sukhothai to be shown around a local market, which honestly made our stay just so memorable.
That day we were then asked if we would like to travel with Katherine to go and look at an elephant that needed rescuing as it had a broken hip and was still carrying out logging. Of course we agreed and after 8 hours driving we were shown down a path where this elephant could be seen, and it was simply heartbreaking the elephant called 'Lucky' was wrapped in heavy chains, had a wooden seat strapped to its back, and each step you could literally see the whole back end of the elephant lift up and each step its right back leg would dangle to try and relieve the pain.
We spent around 1 hour with Lucky and it was a moment that will live with me forever. To see such an animal in such pain still having to pull heavy logs around was so sad, and I could see the impact it also had on Katherine. The following week Katherine released the news on her social media about Lucky, and within 6 hours had raised the entire funds to ensure Lucky could be brought back to BLES as its forever home.
I could write endless paragraphs regarding our stay, the food which is just stunning, and not just breakfast! Everyday you have breakfast, lunch and a meal in the evening, and belive me when I say the quality of the food given to you is outstanding. Also the beautiful dogs and cats that Katherine also cares for, and Minion the Boar that loves tummy tickles with a broom!
If you truly want to experience 5 amazing days, and a memory that will last a lifetime then you have to book a visit to BLES, and you can also have the same life changing experience as we did.
