点评:Owner/founder Katherine goes above and beyond to provide a genuine, authentic, moving experience for guests. The elephants, of course, are central to all operations in a truly ethical sanctuary. There were so many parts of this trip that exceeded expectations, I wanted to share!
AIRPORT/SHUTTLE
To and from the airport, you will be picked up by a BLES branded sprinter van with modern amenities.
LODGING
We started each morning being transported from our lodging which had a pool and A/C. The lodging itself was very comfortable with the sweetest host. Bottled water, coffee, showers, and bedding all made for a comfortable stay.
FACILITIES
Next, we began our days sharing with a small group of travelers over coffee and breakfast and then ventured to help slice apples, wash fruit, and observe certain elephants receiving their medical care and spa treatment pedicures ;) the small group itself feels like family; not a large formulaic tour group.
Katherine does a wonderful job sharing her deep knowledge of elephants through meaningful storytelling and her experiences. She curates a safe space where guest can share, reflect, and ask questions.
The grounds and home base are impeccable, and staff go out of their way to make sure you are well fed and hydrated. You don’t need to worry about water access or filters, and you can refill your water bottle until your heart’s content. There are several toilets with running water and toilet paper on the campus, so you do not need to worry about that! Shade, fans, and comfort seating are there for breaks between jungle walks and activities.
VOLUNTEERING
After a bit of volunteer work (adaptable to your needs) we either load up in a truck flat bed or walk to the forest to simply be in nature and observe elephants. I quite enjoyed watching the skill and expertise of the mahouts as well. Lunch is delicious and catered, picnic style in tree houses or in the forest with giant elephants and a few babies nearby.
CULTURE AND PEOPLE
I wasn’t expecting this next part, but Katherine coordinated daily outings in the community. You absolutely could not get more authentic experiences - I never felt like a tourist, but like a friend visiting a friend’s house for dinner. Katherine helped translate when it was needed. Sunrise hikes, traditional rice patty farming, playing volleyball with children from the village, markets, weaving, local coffee shops… the list goes on. It is Kat’s way of giving back to the locals and they were so welcoming and hospitable I did not want to leave. Spending time with the people in such meaningful ways was an absolute gift.
BRING SOME EXTRA BAHT!
On that note, make sure to bring some extra baht to pay small fees that go back to the hosts of these excursions. They are well worth the reasonable rates, I just neglected to convert my money prior to arriving in Sukhothai and recommend doing that BEFORE you fly in.
DINNERS
We would end the evenings eating dinner back at the home base around a family style dining table, reflecting on the day with Kat’s family and your new friends from all over the world. That includes the many animals and rescue dogs that roam freely, the cats in their catio, and whatever other animals that Kat and her team have rescued.
IN SUMMARY
Days were blissfully long and both bellies and hearts were full. I could see children 8 or 9 and up absolutely loving this adventure- from riding in the back of cars, cutting down banana leaves, climbing treehouses, and simply being in nature. Kat’s own family makes the experience even better, and I loved getting to know her husband and boys who joined us when they could.
ELEPHANTS!
I was in awe at the proximity we were with the elephants nearly every time we ventured into the forest. Many times they were so close you could touch them- but you don’t, because that is the point. It took all the will I had not to do so, especially when dodging curious trunks reaching out, but Katherine and her team’s commitment on getting the once-working elephants to unlearn their old jobs and learn to be elephants are the very reason you pick this place; supporting it over commercialized experiences that exploit these amazing animals.
The entire trip was quite moving, full of activities, and never the same day twice. It simply was a beautiful experience for my first trip solo to Thailand, and I am grateful for the many experiences thanks to the entire BLES team.
MUST-HAVE GEAR LIST (not comprehensive, but I would not go without)
-I was grateful I opted for light weight quick dry pants so I could sit on the forest floor without insect bites or scratches.
- Loved my bamboo shirts that were soaked from sweat and heat, but dried relatively quickly.
-My Chaco sandals were the perfect shoe to help with not getting too hot and for getting wet. They worked great on the sunrise hike as well- but I am used to hiking in them back home.
-Wide brim hat and sunglasses were a must.
- Water bottle (I wish I’d left my filter bottle at home and opted for a larger one without the filter feature )
- Backpack for light hiking and carrying gear
- Long sleeve light sun shirt- keeps the intense heat off and doubles for cooler mornings and nights.
-I bought some cooling camping wipes that felt good to use on my face after a hot day.
