点评:I visited Coombe Conduit in September 2025 (The site had been on my list for many a year, but always seemed to miss the dates), and although it took nearly four hours to get there, it was absolutely worth the effort! This quiet, unassuming building tucked away in the quiet backstreets of Kingston, is small but historically significant and played a vital role in supplying Hampton Court Palace with fresh clean spring water for over 350 years. The site, which admission was free on my visit, was built around 1540 during the reign of Henry VIII, Coombe was the grandest of three conduit heads constructed to collect and protect the springs on Coombe Hill. The water it gathered helped sustain the palace until 1876, when the palace was connected to mains water, after that the conduit was left to fall into disuse.
What truly made the visit special, though, were the volunteers. Their knowledge and enthusiasm brought the site to life, turning this small space into a window into the past. It’s a quiet spot, true, but one filled with significance, and the experience feels personal and rare again thanks to the volunteers. Its connection with World War 2 is of note, but I won’t spoil it for you! Hearing that there are plans to open it more regularly next year is fantastic news, more people deserve the chance to discover this true hidden gem. If you’re passionate about Tudor history or enjoy uncovering lesser-known sites, and live closeish… then Coombe Conduit is well worth the trip.
