点评:This is a tough review to write because we really wanted to love this experience. I want to start by saying that the staff were lovely—professional, responsive, and incredibly helpful when we ultimately needed assistance.
My friends and I rented one of the small solar boats while traveling in the area last week. I grew up around boats and am very comfortable operating and navigating them, so I was surprised by just how limited the boat was from the moment we left the marina.
The boat's maximum output is around 1,200 watts, which for us translated to roughly 5–6 km/h. To put that into perspective, a trip that I would estimate may normally take 10–15 minutes from the marina to Villefranche-sur-Mer took us approximately 1.5–2 hours. This was one of the locations that was on the map and suggested to us by the staff.
We spent a significant portion of that time being hit by waves and the wakes of much larger yachts, with some members of our group getting nervous and a little seasick. I quickly messaged the marina because I found the lack of speed/ power a little concerning. They assured me it was normal, so we proceeded on and we eventually made it to our destination, anchored, and had a great time for the rest of the day.
Because we knew the return trip
would take a long time, we planned for about two hours to get back. When we noticed the wind picking up, we decided to leave earlier. Shortly into the journey back, the engine died. I restarted it, but it continued to shut off whenever we tried to increase the power. We ultimately couldn't get above approximately 700 watts, which was only about 3 km/h.
At that point, we had very little ability to move forward, so we contacted the marina again. They sent staff out to find us and tow us back, and I want to emphasize that they handled the situation extremely well. We were very grateful for their quick and professional response.
The part that concerns me is that these boats are being used on open water where you're sharing the sea with large yachts, significant wakes, changing wind conditions, and a rocky coastline.
During the safety briefing, we were told that the power is intentionally limited and that exceeding certain wattage levels could damage the electric motor. I understood that the boats would be slow, but I don't think I fully understood just how little power they actually have until we were out there.
I understand the reasoning behind limiting the speed of a boat that people can operate without a license or captain. However, after our experience, I'm not convinced that having so little power necessarily makes these boats safer. If conditions change or something goes wrong, there is very little ability to accelerate, maneuver, or make meaningful progress against the conditions.
Overall, we were genuinely excited about this experience and really wanted to love it. The concept is great. I just think potential renters should be very aware of what they're getting: these boats are not simply slow—they are extremely limited in power. Personally, I would not put children or inexperienced swimmers on one, and I would recommend spending the extra money on a conventional boat with a proper engine. That, OR, the team should not allow it to go far from the marina.
For us, the additional power and peace of mind would have been worth it.
