A Memorable Family Visit to a Turtle Hatchery

点评：We chose this turtle hatchery over some of the bigger ones in the area after reading mixed reviews, and overall felt this was a better choice from an ethical perspective.
Being a small hatchery located right next to the beach, it was ideal for our family of four. We were shown the egg hatching area, with rows of signs marking the dates and types of turtle eggs buried beneath each one. We were explained to that they buy eggs from local fishermen at higher prices to discourage people from eating them (which is illegal), as well as caring for turtles that lay eggs there. I’m not completely sure how everything works behind the scenes, but the explanation seemed genuine and believable.
The rest of the facility consists of concrete tanks housing five different types of turtles at various ages. Most were rescue turtles, with some missing fins or unable to properly submerge due to ingesting plastic bags that trapped air inside them — which was really sad to see.
Initially, we were only allowed to touch the shells of the turtles, with the explanation that it was similar to being tickled or stroked for them.
There were some hatchlings only a few days old in one of the tanks, which was incredible and adorable to see. They did say we could pick one up, although I wasn’t completely sure how I felt about that or whether it was the right thing to do. They were due to be released the following day, but as we visited in the early afternoon there was no release taking place.
Overall, we had a wonderful and memorable experience. The kids absolutely loved it. I’m not sure you can find a completely perfect or truly ethical turtle hatchery, but this one definitely seemed to be doing its best to support and protect the turtles. It would be great to see whether the 1.5-year-old turtles are eventually released after their rehabilitation.
