Wilderness, History, Wildlife and the Trip of a Lifetime

点评：This is a trip of a lifetime for anyone who is fascinated by wildlife and drawn to wild places. The Westward is a unique and historic traditional wooden ship that is on the National List of Historic Places. It is an amazing time machine that not only transports one to wild places but does it in gracious style. It has a relatively shallow draft so she can navigate into small inlets and coves that the big ships can't get near. We leisurely traveled for eight days between Sitka and Juneau; kayaking, hiking and exploring by day and sleeping in silent comfort while anchored in sheltered bays at night.
The Westward is delightfully intimate with four cabins so there are usually eight guests and the Captain, First Mate/Naturalist and Chef. The crew (Casey, Ryan and Ben) on our trip are delightful and supremely competent people. They made our journey a truly life-enrichening adventure. We saw salmon spawning, otters, sealions, porpoise, brown bears and innumerable creatures in the intertidal zones. At one point the Captain shut off the engine and we silently drifted for an hour near a pod of whales who were "bubble netting" to surround and dine on a school of fish. We saw and photographed so many species of birds that I couldn't begin to list them all. We watched as a glacier calved. We learned so much.
Often on hikes with Ryan (our naturalist) we foraged wild berries, greens, and mushrooms which we brought back to ship so Ben could incorporate them into our meals. Oh what meals! His culinary skills were way beyond our expectations. Everything, down to the bread and ice cream, Ben made from scratch daily. I have rarely had such pleasurable dining in stared restaurants, let alone on a small ship in a wilderness fjord crowned by a radiant milky way. I can't imagine a better trip.
