We Showed Up Unannounced… and Left With 8 Bottles!

One of our absolute favorite experiences in Greece!
First, a little advice: call ahead and make a reservation. We, being dumb Americans, did not. We just showed up unannounced and quickly realized we were literally the only visitors at the winery.
Instead of turning us away, the Liakou family welcomed us in, stopped what they were doing, and gave us what turned into an incredible private wine tasting and behind-the-scenes look at how they make their wine. Vassilis even came in from harvesting grapes to walk us through their different varieties and tell us the story and history of his family’s winery.
And the wine was fantastic. Apparently our tasting got a little out of hand because we somehow left with eight bottles.
What really made the visit special, though, was the hospitality. There was nothing touristy or scripted about it—just a family passionate about what they do and willing to take time out of their day to share it with two Americans who probably should have called first.
If you’re visiting Meteora, make the trip to Domaine Liakou. It was personal, authentic, completely unexpected, and one of those experiences we’ll be talking about for years.
