点评:After hiking at Oirase Gorge, we took a JR bus from Nenokuchi to Yasumiya at Lake Towada. The journey is 13 mins long. On arrival one can eat lunch at the 2F restaurant at the JR Towada House where the bus stopped.
After lunch we visited the newly opened and informative Towada Visitor Centre which is next to our hotel, Towada Lakeview. There is a new hotel nearby Towadako Sakura.
It was very windy that day and one should always be prepared with thick sweater, gloves and hat.
Lake Towada is a beautiful lake that straddles both Aomori and Akita Prefecture. Many thousand of years ago, Towada volcano began to erupt and formed a caldera of a depth of 327 meters and 14 kilometers wide Rainwater started accumulating in the caldera, and progressively, a lake that reflects the sky and surrounding mountains was formed.
We walked along the lake's promenade to view the Statue of Maidens. The statue was built in 1953 by Kotaro Takamura to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Lake Towada National Park.
Ebisu Daikoku Island on Lake Towada can be easily seen from the promenade too. The soil on the lava-made island lacks nutrients but it is amazing how pine trees and other plants can still grow beautifully on it!
Early the next morning, I took a walk along the lake's promenade again to Towada-jinja Shrine viewing the wonderful display of colours in the sky caused by the rising sun. There are a few cafes situated just by the lakeside.
There are two types of ferry services. One is a round trip while the other sails from Yasumiya to Nenokuchi.
We took the 9 am JR bus to Shin-Aomori and the journey was so picturesque. Firstly the bus travelled along Oirase Gorge and then it climbed uphill revealing more amazing autumn colors of yellow, oranges and red. It reached a climax when we had our toilet break of 10 mins at Sukayu Onsen. The surrounding mountains are all covered by a display of different autumn colors. It was amazing to observe such spectacle of autumn colors during our bus journey. It would be lovely to stop here, hike around and have lunch before catching the next bus back to Shin-Aomori. However we did not have the time for it.
