点评:The Shiretoko Five Lakes are an area of truly stunning natural beauty.
Due to time constraints — and knowing that during bear season, individual visitors cannot access the regular trails without a certified guide — we had originally decided not to join a guided tour.
Then our ocean cruise was cancelled because of strong winds and high waves.
So we signed up for a tour to two of the lakes instead.
We never regretted it.
Our guide, Yuki Ako, was wonderful: friendly, knowledgeable and genuinely eager to answer questions and make sure everyone got the best possible experience.
The scenery was beautiful, but the guided walk added so much more to it. Learning about the forest, the lakes and the wildlife from someone who clearly loves the area made the experience all the more enjoyable.
In fact, the trek was so enjoyable that it seemed to be over far too soon.
Fortunately, there was still time for some shopping at the Field House, whose very well-stocked souvenir shop provided a suitable post-hike distraction.
We enjoyed the experience so much that we’re already planning to return next year — this time for the full tour covering all five lakes.
