点评:Beautiful setting, but the hotel experience fell short of five-star expectations.
My wife and I stayed at Alexander House & Utopia Spa for three days as a relaxing staycation. We were looking forward to a high-quality experience, particularly given the hotel’s five-star positioning.
We upgraded to a suite so we could bring our kitten, and the room itself was very pleasant. The newer building is attractive and the bathroom was particularly impressive. Unfortunately, there were some basic maintenance issues. There was no adequate ventilation, meaning the bathroom steamed up badly, and one of the sinks did not drain properly. Despite this being reported, it took two days to resolve.
The biggest disappointment was the food.
The choice was surprisingly limited for a five-star hotel, with only a handful of options available and the same tomato and basil soup appearing throughout our stay. My wife had several issues with her meals, including an overcooked steak that had to be returned and sea bass served with parsnips that were burnt but also undercooked. We have photographs of this.
Lunch was also disappointing. On one occasion, my wife ordered a goat’s cheese and beetroot salad with grilled chicken. The goat’s cheese was missing and, when she queried it, a member of staff actually pointed to the chicken and told her, “That’s goat’s cheese.” Although a manager later apologised, no alternative was offered.
There were other details that didn’t reflect five-star standards, including dirty cutlery and poorly prepared spinach at breakfast.
To be fair, not everything was negative. Some members of staff were polite and helpful, and Amanda, the deputy manager, listened carefully and professionally when we raised our concerns.
The management response, however, was disappointing. We were told that the General Manager would speak with us the following morning, but this didn’t happen until we raised the matter again at checkout. We explained that our concerns weren’t about getting compensation; we simply expected the issues to be acknowledged and dealt with appropriately.
The General Manager eventually offered a gesture towards a future stay and said he would follow up by email. More than two weeks later, we are still waiting.
The spa facilities themselves were the highlight of the property. They were clean, relaxing and well maintained, and the experienced spa team appeared knowledgeable and professional.
Overall, we found there to be a significant gap between the hotel’s five-star positioning and the experience we actually received. The property has plenty of potential, and there are clearly some very good staff members, but consistency needs to improve — particularly with food quality, staff training, attention to detail and management response.
We would happily return to use the spa, but based on this stay, we would think twice before booking another overnight stay.
