点评:My husband and I did the Sunday rum tour and tasting (2:30 pm) that was conducted by Martyn.
We had to wait about 10 minutes as he was finishing up a tasting with a group of five. There was another couple for the tour, and Martyn welcomed us and then began our tour.
Martyn was an excellent tour guide and walked us through the rum making experience and allowed us to sniff and taste along the way.
Richland Rum is a single-estate rum, meaning that everything for the rum is grown and done in Georgia. The process begins on the Richland farm in Richland, GA where all of the sugarcane is grown. That is the only sugarcane used in their Richland rums. After the sugar cane is harvested, it is taken to one of the distilleries and the sugar cane is turned into pure sugar cane syrup. After this, the yeast is added and the fermentation process begins. Once it is ready, it then goes into the distillation process, which is where it is turned into rum. After it becomes rum, it is placed into American-made white oak barrels, where it ages for various times, depending upon which Richland Rum it is slated to become. Once it comes out of the barrels, it is ready for bottling and labeling.
Once we concluded the tour, we were able to taste five varieties of their Richland rum, ranging from a white rum best used for mixed drinks to the darkest rum, which is best used for sipping. In addition, we got to taste two mixed drinks made with their rum, as well as their Richland Satsuma orange rum liqueur, which is a sipping liqueur.
We had a great time, learned about making rum, and got to taste some really good rums.
Bottles are available for purchase. Remember...it is only available in Georgia, so if you like it, you should buy some at the end of your tour.
