点评:My weekend at Whitewater Kayak school was a great success.
I was always interested in trying this so I signed up for the two day course. The first thing you learn is a whitewater kayak is very unstable, not at all like my flat water kayaks, so you have to learn how to exit the boat quickly and safely when you flip it over - which I did at least 10X on day #1.
So on both days they taught us about the river, currents, how to bring your boat into the whitewater and we learned various strokes - “C” stroke, “S” stroke and how to “Ferry” your boat across the moving rapids to get a more favourable pathway.
End of Day #1, Leaders: “OK let’s go down the river”; Me: “what? Let’s go down the river?” Yikes! I hadn’t even seen the river course yet, but away we went. 20 metres in, I flipped the boat, ripped off the water skirt and exited the boat, floating downstream feet first the rest of the course. At the end, their was a steep drop and a “Hole” which I ended up in, water crashing down on me and for a few seconds I was trapped and getting worried until I was eventually pushed out by the current. This was a little scary and I was doubting my decision to try this sport.
Back to the lodge for dinner and a discussion about my concerns with my instructor.
Day #2, back on the water learning more techniques and I only flipped the boat once. End of the day, time to tackle the river again. There were 12 people in the course, 3 backed out but I said to myself, I paid for this and I would regret it if I didn’t face my fear and take on the river. This time the Coaches took us to the bottom of the river on foot and we scouted out a pathway - much better, at least I had half an idea as to what to do. My instructor told me to make sure I took on the waves by leaning forward in my boat and to keep paddling - don’t fall back or you’ll flip the boat.
So me, the instructor and the other guy in our group set out, me at the back. The other student got caught up in the upper river and I sped past him, my instructor yelled to keep paddling. I cleared the part where I dunked the day before, shot down the middle part of the river and veered to the right. Up ahead I could see the end of the course and the dreaded hole. I was on the wrong side of the river and knew I had to get left, so I ferried my boat at 10 O’clock across the rapids, aimed for the rock to the left of the hole, turned a sharp right, leaned into the water and shot through to the fringe of the left side of the hole and paddled out. I had successfully conquered the river and met my fear head on.
Oh man, talk about an intense and exhilarating experience. I was super proud and emotional when it was all over. Not bad for 63 years old.
