点评:I stopped at the Michi no Eki rest area at Utashinai today. This rest area is about 80km north of Sapporo, between Sunagawa and Ashibetsu. It’s a small town of 2000, and above the rest area is a hot springs bath house. The Michi no Eki has a large parking lot and a very small gift shop. I always follow one rule for visiting small town rest areas, always buy one item. Hokkaido is rapidly aging and depopulating. Every little bit of money helps the town. As I said, this rest area is small compared to those along the highways, but it did have homemade sweets, pet treats, and a few other things. Being a rest area, there are also restrooms available. Most Michi no.Eki have a restaurant, but this one was no longer in operation, so as an alternative, there was a food truck available in the parking lot, serving local venison curry and varieties of pasta. The deer curry was delicious, and was a bargain at 700 yen. There are also plenty of vending machines for drinks. It’s small town Hokkaido. Keep an open mind, don’t expect too much, and buy something to help the community and you will enjoy taking a break here. I did.
