点评:My wife and I were traveling through southern Utah while visiting Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon and decided to take some side trips to explore the surrounding communities. Kanab turned out to be a very pleasant surprise, and the Kanab Museum is definitely worth visiting.
One of the best things about this museum is that admission is completely FREE, thanks to support from the local community. We really appreciate communities that invest in preserving their history and then make it available for visitors to enjoy without an admission charge.
And Kanab certainly has some stories to tell!
We especially enjoyed learning about Kanab’s connection to Hollywood. The town and the beautiful surrounding countryside became a popular location for studios filming Western movies and television shows. Throughout Kanab, you can also find plaques and photographs recognizing many of the actors who worked here. It was fun finding some of our favorites, including John Wayne and Don Knotts.
We also discovered an especially fascinating chapter of Utah and Kanab history involving women and voting. Utah women received voting rights in 1870, and Seraph Young cast a ballot in Salt Lake City on February 14, 1870, becoming the first woman to vote under Utah’s equal-suffrage law—50 years before the 19th Amendment was ratified.
Kanab later made its own remarkable contribution to that history. In 1911, Kanab voters elected an all-woman town government, one of the earliest in America. The women took office in 1912 and worked to improve the safety and appearance of their community. That was one of the most interesting pieces of local history we learned during our visit.
The museum gave us a much greater appreciation for Kanab. There are plenty of beautiful sights and adventures in this part of Utah, but taking time to learn the stories of the people who lived here makes the area even more interesting.
If you are traveling near Zion National Park or Bryce Canyon, make Kanab one of your side trips. Visit this free museum and then spend some time exploring the town and looking for the plaques celebrating its Hollywood history.
Free, interesting, educational, and well worth the trip. Five stars from my wife and me!
