点评:Wow, wow, wow!!!! It will be difficult to put in words the experience my wife and I had travelling with Gorillas & Beyond for 17 days throughout Uganda. I am going to give it a shot though. I started researching for our July of 2025 trip way back in January of 2024. I am a thorough trip researcher and planner. It is basically my hobby. I researched roughly 10 different companies, and I eventually chose Wyclef and Gorillas & Beyond. My wife and I couldn't have been happier with the decision.
Two of the main reasons that I chose Wyclef were the reviews here on Tripadvisor and the cost/price that he quoted me along with the value. His price fell somewhere in the middle of all the quoted prices I received. Once I started communicating with Wyclef, he was always very responsive to any questions that I had. We used email as well as WhatsApp. He originally gave me a 14-day itinerary in which I asked to add 3 additional days. He easily did this, and I felt very secure in taking his advice. He offered different lodging options, and I was able to pick and choose from these options. He kept me up to date during the 18 months leading up to the trip.
Obviously, the most important part of the vacation is the time spent on the actual vacation. Gorillas & Beyond were 10 stars out of a possible 5!!!! Wyclef met us at the airport, and it felt like meeting a lifelong friend. He was originally supposed to spend the first few days of the trip with us as our guide. Unfortunately, something came up, and he could only spend the first day/night with us before handing us off to one his guides. Though I have no doubts to Wyclef's guiding abilities I think we really lucked out that he passed us on to Victor.
We met Victor at breakfast on our first full day. He started out as our guide before quickly transitioning into a trusted friend and finally becoming our "African son". In our eyes the guide on an African safari is what will make the trip something extra special. Any safari in Africa will be incredible but if you are lucky enough to have a guide like Victor, it makes it a trip of a lifetime and one where you make a lifelong connection with someone. Victor did just that!!!
Spending 16 days together with a stranger driving across his country can take a few days of figuring things out sometimes. That was not the case with Victor. He has amazing personal skills and communication skills. We seemed to be on the same page right on day 1. Though we had a pretty strict itinerary already planned he was always giving us different options for each day. He quickly sensed our personalities and what was important to us and made each day we spent with him an amazing adventure.
During the trip I came up with what I think made a great guide when it came to finding the wildlife. I called it the "3 P's". Passion, Pride, and Patience. Victor had all three maxed out. His passion was incredible. It felt like he was seeing the animals for the first time like we were. His excitement was palpable. His pride in his abilities was also clearly evident. That pride is what would keep him searching for the elusive leopard or lion long after other guides would have given up. Lastly, his patience as a young man dealing with two mid-50s Americans on safari for the first time, as well as having the patience to continue searching for the animals when he easily could have called it a day and took us back to the lodge. An amazing guide and young man with an incredible future in front of him.
The main reason that my wife and I came to Uganda was for the safari and the animals. Obviously, the mountain gorillas were the main attraction. We did two gorillas treks. We did the 4-hour habituation trek and the normal 1-hour trek. Both were amazing!! We also did the chimpanzee trek in Kibale which was also amazing, and I highly recommend. Victors guiding ability also got us encounters with the Big 5. We had 4 out of the 5 within the first 2 days of the trip. The elusive leopard was making himself tough to find. We were on our last real day of having a good chance of a leopard sighting/encounter in Queen Elizabeth NP. I know Victor kept looking for at least an extra 2 hours before we were to make the drive to Bwindi. His persistence paid off as we both spotted a young leopard in a tree at the same time. We got to spend 20 minutes with the leopard at a safe distance, and I was able to get some amazing photos.
The persistence doubly paid off because after the leopard left the tree and disappeared into the bush we started to drive away and exit the park. Victor made an amazing spot in a tree 300 meters away. Yes, the famous tree climbing lions of Ishasha!!! We got to watch 2 adults and 2 cubs up in a tree sleeping the late morning away. More great photos!! Victor is the man!!!
The added bonus of the trip with Gorillas & Beyond was the cultural and personal experiences that we had thanks to Wyclef and Victor. We met and had lunch with Wyclef's wife Lydia and their son Ethan at their home. Words cannot express what a special time that we had sharing lunch and learning how similar Ugandan families are to American families. During our trip we were also lucky enough to meet Victor's dad who is also a guide and two of Victor's sisters. We felt so special meeting members of Wyclef's and Victor's families. Wyclef also set up two school visits for us during our stay. My wife just retired from teaching, and it brought tears to her eyes having the young Ugandan children sing to her. These experiences were just as if not more impactful than anything else during the trip.
The lodges we stayed in were all amazing. The food was spectacular, especially in both of Wyclef's lodges. I cannot say enough about how we were treated by everyone we met in Uganda. The generosity and kindness displayed by the people of Uganda needs to be shared throughout the world.
Sooooo, if you are still reading this incredibly long review there are 3 main points. 1. Choose Uganda for safari. 2. After choosing Uganda, select Gorillas & Beyond as the company to guide you across Uganda. 3. Ask Wyclef if you can have Victor be your guide. Tell him that his "American parents" Eric and Christine send their love.
