Outstanding historic collections + several interesting exhibitions
Harvard Museum of Natural History的点评
点评:Harvard's Museum of Natural History has outstanding historic collections + several interesting exhibitions located just a short walk from Harvard Yard. Several of the galleries go into some depth on some topics, so you get more than just a simple overview. Exhibitions of particular interest (most of which were donated by an alumnus who was interested in the topic):
• the mineral & gem collection is extensive, going into some depth on how these are formed, what the major varieties are, and showing lots of samples drawn from across the world.
• another highlight are the galleries of flowers & sea creatures made entirely of glass models.
• these glass models are beautiful (handmade by a family from Bohemia) and will never fade like a real sample would.
• kids & adults will like the special exhibition on the history of sea monster legends and why so many of them were added to nautical maps of that era to scare the sailors.
• the beetles collection (from one of the Rockefeller's) shows specimens collected over a lifetime.
• the mammals gallery has been restored to its original layout (with taxidermy animal specimens & giant whale skeletons hanging from the ceiling), so you can see how 19th Century Harvard students were taught about the natural world.
A great place to visit if you're interested in natural history.
