点评:This is a category A historic listed building, with some of its parts dating back to the 12th century.
The tower with its stone spire was added in the 13th century. Obviously the church has undergone many alterations over the centuries, but is very attractive , with an extremely calm and peaceful demeanour.
The ancient kirkyard within lovely grounds , is extremely interesting to wander round - with tombs & monuments engraved with Latin inscriptions dating from the 16th century.
We were lucky enough to be given
a tour of the interior by the hospitable lady custodian who lives beside the church, and obviously has a great affection for it.
She showed us carved wooden panels that had been rescued for posterity, and the huge church organ that previously belonged to Michael Portillo’s father.
There is also a war memorial at the gateway, and don’t forget to look out for “The Devil’s Bluestone” at the entrance - which legend has that the devil hurled in fury at the church from the Isle of May.
