Worth the walk to the western end of Enoshima, but allow plenty of time for the journey

点评：I visited the Iwaya Cave in early March 2026 during a one-night trip to Enoshima, and it turned out to be the highlight of my visit to the island.
The caves were formed over thousands of years as waves eroded the coastal rock along geological faults. There are two caves: the First Cave, about 150 meters deep, and the much shorter Second Cave. In the First Cave, visitors explore the interior carrying candles, which creates a wonderfully atmospheric experience. Along the way there are religious objects and monuments, reflecting the cave’s long history as a place of devotion. Tradition holds that figures such as Kukai and Nichiren practiced here, and pilgrims have long visited the cave carrying candles to pray.
The Second Cave is lower and narrower in places, so visitors may need to bend over as they proceed. At the far end, a statue of Ryujin, the dragon god associated with the founding legend of Enoshima, appears in dramatic purple lighting. When visitors clap their hands, flashes of light simulate lightning—an entertaining and memorable finish to the exploration.
One practical point: from the torii gate at the northern entrance to the island, reaching the cave requires quite a long walk with many ups and downs, so visitors should allow plenty of time. I found the return walk rather exhausting. There is also a small boat service from near the torii gate to Chigogafuchi, which takes only about ten minutes, but the schedule is irregular and it may not be reliable if you are pressed for time.
For anyone visiting Enoshima, however, making the effort to reach the far end of the island is well worth it.

不过，对于任何到访江之岛的人来说，前往岛屿的尽头绝对值得。
