点评:Today I took my disabled son to this leisure centre and was met with what I can only describe as discrimination under the Equality Act 2010, along with a serious safeguarding failure.
My son is a Type 1 diabetic and must check his blood sugars every 10–15 minutes during activity, as he drops extremely quickly when swimming. We regularly visit pools across the Midlands, and have never experienced anything like this.
On arrival, we asked if his clear medical bag could be kept safely with the lifeguard in the booth where wristbands are issued. This was flatly refused, with no explanation other than “I’m not looking after that.” I clearly explained that the bag contained essential medical supplies, including needles (backup insulin pens and a finger pricker).
Despite this, we were told to leave the bag on the side of the pool near the toddler area.
I was honestly shocked. Being instructed to leave a transparent bag containing needles and hypo treatments unattended where young children could access it is a major safeguarding concern. I cannot understand how anyone could believe this is safer than securing it behind a staffed booth.
This also represents a complete failure to make reasonable adjustments, as required under the Equality Act 2010. Every other pool we have visited has been able to accommodate a medical bag appropriately, so why not this one?
For the first time since my son’s diagnosis, I genuinely felt he was discriminated against because of his disability. I’m deeply saddened that other families managing Type 1 diabetes may face the same treatment here, and I’m extremely concerned about the safety implications for other children and swimmers.
This situation needs urgent review
