点评:I spent a full day at Manassas doing terrain research for a Civil War game, and the biggest thing that surprised me was just how big and hilly the battlefield is. Maps really don’t do it justice.
If you’re willing to walk, this park is awesome. Matthews Hill, Henry Hill, Stone House, the Unfinished Railroad, Deep Cut, Chinn Ridge, Stone Bridge...they all make a lot more sense once you’re actually standing there. Henry Hill especially surprised me. From Matthews Hill you can immediately see why the Confederates fell back there. It dominates the whole area.
The Unfinished Railroad was another highlight. I expected something that looked like one long railroad cut, but it changes constantly between cuts, raised embankments, woods, and flatter sections. Walking it gave me a completely different picture of the Second Manassas fighting.
Fair warning though, this is a hiking-heavy battlefield if you really want to see it. You can do the driving tour, but a lot of the coolest stuff is away from the parking lots. I walked a ton and was pretty beat by the end of the day.
Really well preserved, beautiful battlefield, and one of the better Civil War sites I’ve visited. Bring water, good shoes, and give yourself plenty of time.
