Denali Visitor Transportation System的点评
点评：I visited Denali NP primarily for wildlife viewing, not for the scenery or Denali, which you can only see about 30% of the time. While the park is said to have abundant wildlife, you don’t actually see many animals from the bus. Over two days, we saw elks, bears, sheep, caribous, ptarmigans, and foxes. That sounds like a lot, but only the ptarmigans, foxes and two elks were relatively close to the roadside, and the encounters were very brief. Most of the time, even with my standard 8x48 binoculars, I could only make out the outlines of animals because they were too far away. You’d get a better view with a telescope for sure, but without either, the animals would just look like dots.
I rode this bus over two days. There’s a 10-minute bathroom break and a slightly longer stop where the bus turns around. You can hop off the bus and hike off-trail, but I stayed on the bus the whole time and only hiked around the visitor center area. The scenery is beautiful but a bit monotonous, so 4.5 hours felt quite long without much wildlife to see. Some people on the bus were even sleeping.
I'm sure the wildlife in this park is abundant, but the buses (both Transit and Tundra) aren't really designed for wildlife viewing. This is because there's only one road that both buses and cars can use, so your experience is limited to the area around it. Also, keep in mind that you can only drive up to a certain point, and beyond that, you either need to be on the bus, on foot, or on a bike. I imagine the experience would be vastly different if you camped and hiked, but that's a significant hurdle for many people in terms of logistics, time, experience, etc.
