点评:We noticed this weathered bronze sculpture in front of Waterfront Station as we were walking towards Canada Place from Gastown Steam Clock. We stopped to read the inscription on the pedestal and learned that it is a war memorial erected in honour of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) workers who perished during World War I. The statue depicts an angel carrying a fallen soldier to heaven.
There was no mention of the sculpture's name on the pedestal so I looked it up online and read that it is called Angel of Victory (also Winged Victory) by Montreal sculptor Coeur de Lion McCarthy and is one of three identical statues commissioned by CPR. The other two are in Montreal and Winnipeg. Originally, the angel was holding a full wreath in her left hand. Wreath got broken at some point.
Most people just hurry along the sidewalk where this sculpture is installed. Not the best location for a war memorial but I understand it has been outside Waterfront Station since 1922. Do pause and gaze at the Angel of Victory and remember those who answered the call of duty and never came home.
