点评:Paraphrasing a line from Edgar Allen Poe’s poem The Bells, I heard no “jingling and tinkling” from the Three Bells of Fira, a mountain top village aka Thera. Had I visited when a religious service was about to begin, I may have enjoyed hearing the bells peal. This church is officially called Catholic Church of the Dormition. Originally constructed in 1757, the 1956 earthquake caused significant damage. The building has not been altered in almost 70 years. Views of the Aegean Sea are phenomenal, but cruise ships that bring hordes of tourists—including me—are not well regarded by locals. Still, walking about Fira/Thera narrow streets and gawking at bougainvillea and whitewashed buildings is a treasured memory. I would enjoy a full week on Santorini and another on Rhodes, two of my new favorite travel destinations.
