I recently had the privilege of taking a walking tour of Portland with Leigh Rush Olson, who stepped in as a replacement guide. There were five of us from a Norwegian Cruise Line ship, and the tour was arranged through Compass Tours. Leigh was outstanding.
She drew on her lifelong Portland experiences, historical research, and photographs to give us both the big picture and the details that brought the city’s history and character to life. At every stop, she told meaningful stories that made you feel as if you were there or at least gave you the best perspective to understand why that place mattered.
What I especially appreciated was the way she wove diversity, equity, and inclusion into Portland’s story. From Irish immigrants and women trailblazers to First Nations history and the Freedom Trail, she highlighted voices and achievements that helped shape the city. She tied together architecture, social justice, historical events, and the people behind them, showing how Portland grew through its resources, needs, and innovative spirit. As a person of color, I felt included and a part of the American History she was telling.
Leigh herself is clearly one of those innovative people. She loves what she does and has the gift of sharing her knowledge in an engaging, memorable way. As an educator, I was amazed by how much I retained from such a brief tour, and I left both happy and deeply satisfied.
If I could, I’d give her 6 out of 5 stars.
