点评:Dunster is a charming medieval village that sits within the Exmoor National Park. We stopped here for a cream tea and had a quick explore. The village is not large so its easy to do a walk which takes in all the main sights.
Its a very picturesque, traditional town with pastel coloured houses, cottages with thatched roofs, ivy-covered buildings, a couple of traditional pubs, cobbled streets, and a pretty village garden.
The main sights are the 11th century castle, St George Church & priory, and the 16th century yarn market which stands, smack-bang in the middle of the main street.
If you are planning on visiting the castle, you’ll need to allow a couple of hours at least. It takes some time to see everything and entry is £18pp, which is fine if you have the time to enjoy it, but it’s a lot if like us, you would only have time to manage a quick visit. We walked up to the castle and looked around the ancient stables but we couldn’t see much of the castle itself without going through the ticket office.
The quirkiest attraction in Dunster is the doll museum. This is a very sweet museum with several hundred dolls of all kinds. Its only small and doesn’t take long (entry free, small donation appreciated).
VILLAGE WALK TIP: Both the Exmoor National Park website and the National Trust site have village walking trail maps. The walks vary slightly and have different starting points. The Exmoor NP trail is easier to follow because it starts from the large Information Centre carpark.
PARKING TIP: If driving, you have to be lucky to get a parking spot in the village itself. A better option is to do what we did and park at the Dunster & Exmoor NP Centre. It’s only a very short walk to the main street.
