点评：On a rather warm March day in Tucson, my brother, sister-in-law, husband and I decided to visit Kartchner Caverns State Park. It about a 50-mile drive from Tucson. My brother bought the tickets about a week in advance. Daily, they offer Rotunda / Throne tours and Big Room tours. The latter was sold out the day we wanted to visit, and the former had limited availability. I recommend purchasing tickets several weeks in advance if you have a preference of caves and times. Also, I suggest going to their official website for additional programs and events as well as their general tour information, e.g., what you can and cannot take on the tour.
We arrived about two hours early to walk through the gardens and explore the museum. We all agreed that this was a good idea because it prepared us for what we were about to see.
Our tour guide was Rick, one of the best guides I have ever had. He had a deep knowledge of the cave’s history and development. His delivery was excellent, and the care and attention he showed to everyone made the experience more meaningful.
The cave was stunning. It was remarkable how it has been transformed into an authentic tourist site while retaining a sense of mystery and awe. I have toured several caves in the Dordogne region of France that feature prehistoric cave art, and although Kartchner Cavern is very different, it was equally spectacular. We are planning on returning next year to tour the Big Room.
You may feel that the $30 entrance fee is steep. Please keep in mind that it allows this State Park to offer a beautiful experience and, equally important, to remain self-sustaining.
