点评:Staying in the Tucson area, we devoted a day to each of the two areas of the park. At the East section, we did the visitor center first to get a map of hiking trails. Then we did a nice hike from the Douglas Spring trailhead. Even in February, the sun can be hot and there's very little shade in the cactus forest! Wear a good hat and take water. After the hike, we went back to the visitor center to top off our water, and did the circle drive just for scenery and to rest up from the hike...then to the picnic area for a late lunch. The picnic area is quite nice, with shaded tables that are secluded from each other - highly recommended.
At the West section of the park, we did a hike up King Canyon. The trailhead is opposite the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, with its own separate parking. In fact, the drive from Tucson to the trailhead was especially beautiful, through a steep mountain pass in the Tucson Mountain Park. For our King Canyon hike, we chose the upper trail first, which is quite rocky and difficult to walk on. Nearly a mile up, there's a junction, and at this point we headed down into the canyon, getting to see many excellent petroglyphs on the way. The trail back down the canyon to the trailhead was beautiful, going over many rocky ledges in the upper part, and even offered some morning shade in spots. When water flows here, the waterfalls must be spectacular!
