We booked a 5-day combination trip: 3 days in the Danakil Depression, one day in the Gheralta Mountains, and one day in Axum. Every day was different, with millions of changing landscapes and incredible nature.
The Danakil Experience (3 Days)
This felt like a journey to another planet. It is a wild place unlike anywhere else on Earth.
The Volcano: We heard the roar of the lava and saw the smoke even at night. Walking on the dry lava was a truly special experience.
Nature & Landscapes: We traveled through deserts and mountains. We swam in hot springs and visited the famous salt desert with its beautiful lakes and pools.
Dallol: We visited the hottest place in the world! It was so colorful and unique—the views were one-of-a-kind.
The Team: Our guide, Robel, was fantastic—knowledgeable and always ready to help. Our driver, Addis, was equally impressive, and the chef made delicious meals that gave us a real taste of the local food.
The Journey North (Mekelle to Axum)
After the desert, we spent time in Mekelle, a lively city with great coffee and friendly people. From there, our driver Gene drove us north toward Axum. The scenery on this drive was absolutely incredible—we passed through beautiful landscapes, tiny traditional villages, and met many friendly locals along the way. We visited historic monasteries and enjoyed even more amazing local food.
Axum
Our final destination was Axum, a town with so much history and deep religious roots. It was the perfect way to end the trip.
