点评：UNESCO World Heritage Sites are cultural and natural landmarks of universal value that undergo long-term conservation and protection from damage or neglect by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. There are 1,273 of these sites across 173 countries, with 22 in Canada, and only 3 in Nova Scotia. The colorful port town of Lunenburg was inscribed as a cultural site in 1995 because it is considered the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America. It is frequently named and voted the most beautiful small town in Canada.
The biggest tip I can give to any first-time visitor is do not stay here for only one day. No matter how much time you spend planning, things that are beyond your control can go wrong. Extra time affords you more opportunity to experience all the must-do items on your list. Some items to consider include taking a harbor cruise on the Bluenose II schooner (check the schedule in advance), wandering through the town's rectangular grid-pattern streets, and admiring the wooden architecture of the houses by signing up for a walking tour with a local guide. You can also enjoy a relaxing 35- to 40-minute horse-drawn carriage ride through the historic town with Trot in Time Carriage Tours, sample local spirits or learn how rum is made at Ironworks Distillery, take photos of brightly colored 18th century homes, watch a dory being built at the Dory Shop, eat ice cream on the dock along the waterfront, and watch the sunset from a picnic bench on the far side of the harbor along Tannery Road. Remember, this is a small town. It is best explored on foot and by interacting with the local citizens of Lunenburg.
