点评:Calico is a true old mining town, resuscitated into a thriving attraction by Walter Knott of Knott’s Berry Farm. The buildings are (mostly) authentic. It was fun to imagine the town as a vibrant, late 1880’s, community.
It is not a historical reenactment, so don’t expect the pottery store to have a potter’s wheel or the schoolhouse to have a school marm. The stores are kitschy, with a lot of western themed souvenirs. There is a train that makes a small loop with a recorded tour. Guests can go through an actual silver mine. There is a nominal fee for each. Another attraction is “The Mystery House”- a pun filled tour through a….I don’t want to spoil the surprise.
Be sure to visit the old time photography store. You may have to wait a bit for your turn, but it’s worth it. Our photographer had an eye for costuming, poses, and prints. It makes for a great souvenir.
There is food available “in town”. Not authentic “mining food”, whatever that may be, but burgers, pizza, wings and the like.
This may not be the most educational experience, but there is an educational element. Mining was hard work and the desert is an unforgiving place to live. Calico shows the resilience of people on how they can adapt and build a community.
