点评:The catacombs here are overshadowed by the more famous Maltese examples but still worth a visit.
The church itself that is above the burial chambers is small but very interesting with its own unique history.
St Cataldus originated in Ireland and our guide explained how he came to be associated with the church as he was thought to have visited Malta on his way to the Holy Land.
People made pilgrimages to the church in the Middle Ages.
We were shown into the crypt underneath by a lady who obviously took pride in showing off the site, it’s quite claustrophobic inside so might not be suitable for those who don’t like confined spaces.
The catacombs themselves date from the 2nd and 3rd centuries and include small hollows cut from the rock for the burial of infants as well as canopied adult graves like you might imagine.
There is an amazingly well preserved “agape” which is a circular table used as part of the burial rituals and the one here is said to be the best surviving example in the world.
We enjoyed seeing everything, it’s quite small but well worth a visit and likely to be less busy than some of the other catacomb sites in Malta.
