So Much More Than a Walk – An Extraordinary Murray River Experience

点评：My husband and I recently completed the Murray River Trails multi-day walking experience in South Australia's Riverland, and it was one of the highlights of our time in Australia.
What makes this experience so memorable isn't simply the walking. It's the opportunity to slow down, immerse yourself in the Murray River environment and learn about a landscape that is so much more complex and fascinating than you might initially imagine.
Our guides, Sam Sharley and Leon, were exceptional. Sam, whose family established Murray River Trails, shared his extensive knowledge of the river system, wildlife, vegetation and the challenges facing this environment. Leon was equally wonderful, and together they made an excellent team. Their enthusiasm, knowledge and genuine care for everyone in the group added enormously to the experience.
The walking itself was varied and interesting, taking us through floodplains, along riverbanks and into areas we would never have discovered independently. While the terrain is generally flat, it can be uneven underfoot, with fallen branches and other obstacles, so comfortable walking shoes and a reasonable level of fitness are important. Walking poles were certainly appreciated!
Our first day was particularly hot, and I was impressed by how thoughtfully Sam and Leon managed the conditions. Some guests chose to return to the houseboat earlier, while the rest of us continued walking. There was never any pressure, and everyone's comfort was taken into consideration.
The wildlife encounters were a real highlight. Kangaroos at sunrise, including a mother with her joey, emus, a koala and an incredible variety of birdlife. One particularly memorable sight was a pair of spoonbills nesting in an abandoned whistling kite's nest.
Returning to the houseboat each day was another pleasure. The meals were excellent, varied and thoughtfully prepared, and sharing stories around the table with our fellow walkers became an important part of the experience.
Our group included people of different ages and backgrounds, yet everyone came together so naturally. One of my favourite memories was our final evening around the campfire, listening to songs and poetry, with Sam playing his ukulele. It was such a simple, genuine moment and one that will stay with me.
We also had the pleasure of meeting Sam's father, Tony, at the end of our journey, which gave us another lovely insight into the family behind this experience.
Murray River Trails offers something increasingly rare in travel: the chance to disconnect from the usual distractions, connect with nature and enjoy meaningful conversations with people who genuinely care about the place they're sharing.
I came away with a far greater appreciation for the Murray River, its ecosystems and the importance of protecting this remarkable environment.
If you enjoy walking, wildlife, learning and experiences that go well beyond conventional sightseeing, I would wholeheartedly recommend Murray River Trails.
