点评：‘Hercules and the Centaur Nessus’ is one of 10 or more classical marble sculptures that are clustered together in the Loggia dei Lanza, a wonderful open-air gallery right next to Palazzo Vecchio. It's only small but it's completely free to wander through. ‘Hercules and the Centaur’ is one of two sculptures by the famous sculptor, Giambologna, who is often said to be second only to Michelangelo.
This makes it (together with ‘The Rape of the Sabine Women’) one of the important works to look out for at the loggia.
What you see here is a dramatic and very violent scene. It’s the moment when Hercules is about to kill the centaur, Nessus. Just moments before Nessus had tried to kidnap Hercules' wife, Deianira. He picked on the wrong guy.
Hercules has Nessus pinned to the ground in a contorted positionNessus is pinned to the ground and Hercules has dragged his head right back. Hercules right arm grips a heavy club, his muscles are taut and his arm is raised above his head, ready to strike the final blow.
