点评:My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our private guided collecting tour with Paul Murdoch of CHAP Tours. We found some amazing things and learned so much! He started the tour by telling us about the history of the area and showing us his collection of fossils that he has found at Calvert Cliffs over the years. His office is like a mini museum, with a string of whale vertebrae, a dolphin skeleton, examples of the many different types of fossils found at Calvert Cliffs, and lots of beautiful shark teeth. After showing us his collection, he offered us water and snacks and a last chance at a bathroom that wasn’t a porti-potti, and then we headed down to Calvert Beach. (He has access to to three different privately-owned beach access areas, and we selected this one.)
Our tour was timed to coincide with low tide for the best fossil-hunting conditions and the least amount of wading through the water. It was a chilly day, but we were comfortable walking through the water in our hydroskin neoprene pants and wetsuit booties. Your feet will get wet, so be prepared so you can be comfortable throughout the tour. He provided fossil collecting sticks that doubled as walking sticks, which proved to be very handy.
The Calvert Cliffs themselves are amazing. You can see all of the different layers of shells and sand and clay and burrows made by creatures millions of years ago. On the beach we found fossilized turritella, moon snails, pieces of sand dollars, shells, a shark vertebrae, part of a scallop shell with a crab claw still embedded in it, fossil bones, a geoduck, barnacles, and about 10 shark teeth. The conditions weren’t good for finding shark teeth because it was too rough, but we found so many other amazing fossils! And Paul has so much knowledge about the fossils of the area that he could identify and tell us about everything we found.
If you’re interested in finding and learning about fossils and learning about the history of the Calvert Cliffs and surrounding area, I highly recommend CHAP Tours. If you’re visiting Calvert Cliffs for the first time to hunt for shark teeth and other fossils, begin your trip with a tour with Paul and you’ll know what to look for when you go out searching on your own.
