Seeing Chaco Through Native Eyes

点评：We were lucky to have experienced Chaco Canyon through the eyes and mind of Kialo Winters, founder and owner of Navajo Tours USA, whose ancestors have called this land home for generations.
After travelling a distance on a bumpy unpaved road, we met Kialo at the Visitors Center and we and others followed his vehicle on canyon loop drive into the canyon. As the miles passed, the landscape opened before us, then, almost imperceptibly, the canyon revealed itself. The vastness, the silence, and the extraordinary light seemed to slow time. We were awed by the grandeur of the place, but also by its serenity, a feeling that is difficult to capture in photographs or words.
Kialo knows Chaco intimately. As we explored, he brought the ancient world to life, the history of the site, the development of its great pueblos, the ingenuity of its architecture, and the daily lives of the people who built and inhabited them. He helped us look beyond the magnificent Pueblo Bonito, the largest of the great houses as well as Pueblo del Aroyo, to understand the geology, the surrounding landscape, and the remarkable extent of the Chacoan world. He answered the big question, why did his ancestors choose this location.
What made the experience especially memorable was Kialo himself. He was generous with his knowledge, patient with our many questions, and attentive to every detail of our day. He shared stories of his family, his life, growing up on a reservation, leaving and coming back to his roots to share their stories. We never felt that we were simply being shown a collection of ruins. We were being invited to see Chaco as a living landscape, rich with history, meaning, and enduring connection.
The experience exceeded our expectations in every way. We left with a deeper appreciation for Chaco Canyon and memories that will stay with us for a very long time.
If you are planning a visit to Chaco, we cannot recommend Kialo and Navajo Tours USA highly enough.
