点评:We wanted to see the Bisti wilderness area, but everything we read suggested we would be better off with a guide rather than going by ourselves. The lady at BLM emphasized that it was a matter of safety. I’m not so sure it would be dangerous, as long as we had plenty of water, and went later in the day, both for reasons of heat and for always knowing which way was west. Walk west, and you hit the highway. You can’t help it— eventually.
But we were very glad we did have a guide for other reasons. It is a huge area, and we probably would not have seen everything there was to see without Ray’s expert guideship. It was very much worth seeing. Ray was also very informative about the geology and history of the area, and also provided information about Navajo culture and language. There were plenty of opportunities for photography, which was very important to me.
All in all, it was well worth doing this, and I can only give Ray and company my highest recommendations.
Be aware that the hike is roughly 5 hours, covering somewhere between 6 and 8 miles. It’s in the desert and it’s hot. This is not a casual stroll. At 76, I could still manage this, but it took me to my physical limits. My partner is 10 years younger, and he was also exhausted at the end of it. Bring twice as much water as you think you will need, because you will need it.
