点评:The Britannia Bridge, or Pont Britannia, is an dual-purpose, two-tier engineering marvel that spans the Menai Strait between the city of Bangor and the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales.
My family and I found ourselves crossing this bridge on our way to Anglesey back in August.
Designed by renowned civil engineer Robert Stephenson and built originally in 1850, and carried trains for the Chester and Holyhead Railway Company.
Unfortunately the bridge was devastated by fire in 1970 when some idiotic boys dropped a burning torch inside one of the tubular structures that the trains travelled through. This being a 120 year old bridge at this point, and containing materials such as wood and tar, the whole thing was soon ablaze to the point that it was beyond repair.
Instead of abandoning the bridge, it was rebuilt in an entirely new format. Gone were the metal tubes, and in was a new rail deck to trains to continue crossing the Menai Strait, whilst a new, reinforced concrete upper deck was added to enable cars to also use the bridge, making this a truly two-tier, multi-use engineering marvel.
It was on this upper deck that my family now passed on what is today the A55.
You get lovely views over the Strait from this bridge, and apparently there are four massive limestone lions, two on either side of the bridge, though I did not see them...
