During our recent trip to Sri Lanka, a close friend urged us to explore the island’s traditional masks, an art form deeply rooted in folklore, healing rituals, and storytelling. A quick search in Bentota led us to @sunflower_bentota and what followed became one of the most memorable cultural experiences of our journey.
Sri Lankan masks, especially Raksha and Kolam masks, have been used for centuries in rituals and folk dramas. Sadly, handcrafted mask making is a dying art, with only a few artisans keeping this tradition alive in its purest form.
This is where Mr. Mevan Pereira and his family truly stand out. What makes their space special isn’t just the stunning gallery, it’s the live workshop within the same premises, where you can watch masks being carved, painted, and brought to life by hand. Every piece carries a story, a skill, and generations of craftsmanship.
Beyond the art, what touched us most was the warmth and hospitality. We were welcomed like family, encouraged to explore every corner, and gently guided through the stories behind each mask.
