Just ten minutes from Muizenberg Beach, this small seaside town is equal parts working harbour and creative enclave. You can stroll here from Muizenberg, hop on the PRASA train, or take a short cab ride, but however you arrive, the pace immediately slows.
The harbour is the heart of it all. Wander down to the water and walk along the three narrow piers that stretch into the sea, where fishing boats bob gently and seals lounge unapologetically on the docks, sleeping through the day as if they own the place. Nearby, the fish market hums with quiet activity, a reminder that this is still a town built on the ocean.
No visit is complete without stopping at Kalky’s. Order generously. The family platter delivers golden hake, tender calamari, and prawns best enjoyed with lemon and tartar sauce, eaten slowly as gulls circle overhead. The seafood is so fresh it needs no convincing, clean, delicate, and far from the heavy fishiness people often expect.
Walk to the edge of the harbour and you will find the old lighthouse, standing firm since the early 1900s, watching over the bay with quiet authority. When the clouds roll in, the air turns crisp and cold, adding to the drama of the place.
