点评：Situated just beside the popular Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools attraction is the historic Queen Mary Hospital, which originally opened as a sanatorium in 1897 before serving as a hospital between 1916 and 2003. Today the old hospital remains as an architectural testament to the early 20th century.
You can also learn a bit about the old hospitals history by way of useful information signs posted around the grounds which are open to walk through. It seems its early purpose was to treat soldiers returning from WWI with mental complications resulting from their experiences during the war. It continued to treat those with mental illness until the 1970s when the hospital became the national centre for treating those with alcohol and drug addiction.
Note: Seems last year (2025) the old Soldiers Block reopened to the public but with irregular and limited times. There was a note posted to the hospital information board. suggesting it was now open on Sunday's 10am-12pm (see attached photo).
