点评:If hospitality were an extreme sport, Ahambi would take the gold! Wow — I am blown away by the experience my husband and I had with Ahambi on a recent 4-day trek on Mount Kenya (started on Chogoria side and descended on the Sirimon side). We had a private trek as a couple for our belated honeymoon, and it was all of great value for the price. It was a luxurious trip by our standards because of the amenities (sturdy tents, excellent home-cooked meals on the mountain, high sanitation standards, etc.) and the staffing (porters, guides, chef, etc.).
One of my favorite aspects of our trip was that our whole team was made up locals from the area; we had the privilege of learning from them. Our guide Peter and most of the team (porters, chef, assistant guide, sanitation engineer) are from neighboring towns of Mount Kenya including Nanyuki, adding an important and meaningful perspective to the trip. We learned so much about the local wildlife and vegetation from our guide as well.
The team treated us like family — true hosts who made us feel safe, cared for, and energized as we took on the challenge of hiking Mount Kenya. Every morning, we were greeted by our team at the campsite with coffee, tea, and breakfasts of millet porridge, eggs, pancakes, sausages, potatoes, etc. They had hot water packs for us on cold nights, fresh water to fill our camelbaks before each hike, and they set up our tent for us as well. The meals were super healthy and well-balanced with good carbs, proteins, lots of veggies, and delicious fruit.
The hikes were tough, but Peter made sure we were well prepared, giving us briefings every night and checking our oxygen saturation levels and pulses. This is the highest elevation and most strenuous hiking I have ever done. My husband and I had a travel consultation with our medical provider about a month before the trip, and I am not sure if we could’ve handled the altitude without diamox and a good baseline level of fitness. Prepare your lungs and heart with endurance/distance training, preferably hiking with a 2-3L water bottle/camelbak for 5+ hours, rucking often if you don’t have access to mountains, and/or using your stairmaster at the gym. The descent is pretty intense too, so prepare your legs for that as well.
Overall, I cannot recommend Ahambi enough! Asante sana Ahambi team!
