A Great Way To Explore Part Of Canada's Amazing History!! And it's Free!!!
Brockville Railway Tunnel的点评
点评:We had our kids come visit us for their wedding and decided to go for a meal in nearby Brockville. While there we thought it would be fun to check out the nearby Brockville Railway Tunnel, which is apparently Canada's very first railway tunnel.
Located at the base of Market Street West, it's just steps from Brockville’s waterfront and the entrance to Blockhouse Island.
Construction on the tunnel began in September 1854 and the first train passed through the tunnel on December 31, 1860. It was built by the Brockville and Ottawa Railway to provide a rail link from the timber trade of the Ottawa Valley to the Brockville port facilities on the St. Lawrence River ship route.
The tunnel stretches half a kilometer beneath the city features a very cool, light show and immersive soundtrack that brings the tunnel to life.
It's open everyday, 9am-9pm until the winter when it becomes too icy or snowy and then it closes for the season.
It takes about 20–30 minutes to walk through, depending on how much time you take reading the various information plaques posted throughout its length.
The full light and sound program runs for 90 minutes, so there’s always something new to experience with each visit.
It was fun, free and very cool - we were so glad that Brockville has kept this piece of history and has done it up right!
