点评:A couple of falls ago my family and I went to Santa Fe, NM. I went out for a scenic walk by my family. Wandering around the historic plaza streets of the town, I walked by a statue of Saint Francis and a wolf by the basilica. I later learned that it was a statue of St. Francis and the wolf of Gubbio. Came to the Basilica to visit one of the oldest churches in America. Erected in the 1600's, this Basilica has an air of history and depth that I have not seen. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi is a beautiful church and a landmark you cannot miss while in the area. Can see the oldest statue of Mary in the United States. Made in Spain in the 1400s was brought to Santa Fe in 1625 by the Franciscan priest Frau Alonso Benavides. The San Damiano crucifix is which hangs in the sanctuary is an exact replica of the crucifix in a CC Italy from which our Lord bent down to tell Saint Francis “Francis, go and rebuild my house. I love the Saint Francis of Assisi and the wolf in front of the Cathedral Basilica Santa Fe. In the early 13th century, the picturesque Italian town of Gubbio was gripped by terror. A ferocious wolf had been attacking livestock and eventually started preying on the townspeople themselves.
Unable to stop the seemingly invincible beast, the desperate community turned to St Francis of Assisi, known for his deep connection with nature and ability to communicate with animals.
During a visit to the place, Francis strode out to meet the wolf, greeted him as a brother, and confronted him with the harm he was doing. Francis assured the wolf that should he give up his violent ways and protect the town and its people, he would be fed and cared for all of his days.
As a sign of agreement, the wolf placed his paw in Francis’s hand and bowed his shaggy head. On seeing the sincere change in the wolf, the town agreed to the pact. The wolf became a solid citizen of Gubbio, protected the people, and was cared for until the end of his life. When the wolf died, the citizenry deeply mourned his passing. Well worth the visit.
