点评:Our visit to the Huron Historic Gaol in Goderich was a fascinating follow-up to the county museum. Just like the museum, we were able to get in for free, and it made the experience feel like an absolute steal. It’s not often you get to explore a National Historic Site of this caliber without reaching for your wallet, and it really allowed us to take our time and soak in the atmosphere.
The building itself is incredibly unique—it has a rare octagonal design that makes the layout feel like a maze of history. Walking through the narrow hallways and stepping into the cold, stone cells gives you a real sense of what life was like for the inmates back in the 1800s. The contrast between the sparse, tiny cells and the more "luxurious" Governor’s House attached to the jail was one of the most interesting parts of the tour. It really sparked some great conversations with the family about how much has changed in the justice system over the last 150 years.
Even though it’s a former prison, the site is very family-friendly with plenty of well-placed plaques and stories that kept everyone engaged. We especially liked the courtyard areas where you can see the high walls and imagine the daily routines of the people who lived there. Because we weren't worried about the cost of admission, the whole trip felt low-pressure and educational. It’s a must-see if you’re in the Goderich area, especially if you can take advantage of a library pass or a free entry day like we did!
