点评:Fascinating presentation of Sir James Brooke, a one time wealthy heir to some of his deceased father’s money. Rather than a comfortable life in England, he instead bought a large boat and sailed to SE Asia like his hero, Raffles, searching for status and adventure for himself. Not for England. He wanted to escape England and its toxic values, I believe.
Reaching Borneo, he inserted himself into a dispute between the people of Sarawak, and the Sultan of Brunei. Brooke was clever. He befriended both, and agreed to manage the land as the charge of one and the friend of the other. It was win-win-win and it made James King of a large area of Sarawak.
But there is a whitewash here. Like T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia), the preferences and intimacies of James Brooke are notably not represented here. Against the backdrop of capital punishment for same gender intimacy in England, running away was all any person of any self-belief (plus means) could do.
James ran away because he had to, I recognise. What an irony that Brunei ceded so much to James, given the current Sultan’s well-documented persecution of such persons as James clearly was.
Enjoyed the museum, but it’s only a quarter of the real story.
James was at times noble and brilliant. But this museum does no justice to the myriad of ways in which his brilliance manifested. It somehow washes over James and focuses more on his successors and their wives, including the ones who let James’ achievements go down the pan. Jason, the descendant Brooke, does quite well to keep things going with the broad facts of legend that is James. Well done to him.
James would have hated this review, I am sure of that. He got away with a lot. Miles away from the grip of civilisation. What a story.
