Nottingham has been accused of not 'making the most' of its inextricable link to England's most famous outlaw and folk-hero, and there may well be a case to say that accusation is justifies, however at the very heart of the city (I mean figuratively, not geographically) stands this 7ft effigy to the great man himself that telegraphs the city's connection to the world.
Stood in what used to be the moat of Nottingham Castle (now a lawn off Castle Road), this statue, cast in eight seperate pieces of ½ inch thick bronze, depicts Robin Hood aiming an arrow from his famous Yew bow at the Gatehouse of the Castle - a gatehouse representing the authority he so famously fought.
What I love about this statue is that the designer/sculptor (a Mr. James Woodford - a sculptor with The Royal Academy) has been as authentic as is possible with his depiction of Robin Hood.
I should clarify - nobody knows what Robin Hood looked like, or if he even existed - so when I talk about authenticity, I mean to the known details of Medieval fashion.
You will note that this statue does not feature the triangular felted hat and feather so commonly associated with Robin Hood (thanks almost entirely to Errol Flynn), but rather a traditional medieval leather skull cap which were what medieval men were wearing at that time.
I love this statue because it does so beautifully encapsulate the city. Bold, brazen, and a little bit cranky.
Special mention must go to a Mr Philip Clay - a Nottingham businessman who back in 1951 stumped up £5000 of his own money to have the statue built. The council had no involvement in the matter - it was just one local man's vision for the Nottingham public to have a tangible link to their own history and legends.
This statue is entirely free to visit and makes a lovely photograph opportunity.r
The statue was designed to last for 6000 years, and so it is safe to say that you still have plenty of time to fo and visit it. It is an absolute MUST for anyone visiting Nottingham.
