点评：Umiam lake is also known as Barapani lake, which is located on the Guwahati-shillong national highway at north side of Shillong. Travelers driving from Guwahati to Shillong or wise versa inevitably stop here, drawn by the spectacular views and peaceful atmosphere. It was created by damming the Umiam river in the early 1960s by then Assam state electricity board. Intended to produce Hydro Electricity. But then the lake quickly become one of the most popular tourist's destination of Shillong. It also become a prominent venue for boating, water cycling, scooting and Kayaking. Tourists also enjoy here by riding row boats, pedal boats, cruise boats and speed boats as well. We also tried to go for speed boating during our visit, but it was huge crowd in the line, then we skipped and came out.
It is a manmade reservoir that has been formed by damming the Umiam river, which is a tributary of the Brahmaputra river.
What you can do here:
1. Boating and Water sports: Umiam lake is known for its variety of beating options starting from basic pedal boats to extreme level Speed boats. Also its famous for adrenaline seekers, water sports like water skiing and Kayaking.
2. Photography and Birdwatching:
Umiam lake is a paradise for natural lovers. The scenic landscape and various bird species makes it an ideal spot for Photography and Birdwatching.
3. Lumpongdeng Island: This is a picturesque island surrounded by crystal clear water. You can reach island from Umiam lake by boat and this is ideal place for Kayaking, Camping, and enjoying the serene beauty of Umiam lake.
4. Orchid Lake Resort:
A scenic lakeside resort offering comfortable stay and pleasant atmosphere. Spending one night here during your vacation is best option.
5. Lum Nehru Park: This park is located inside Lake premises only. After entering from main entrance it is located near parking area. A beautiful landscaped lakeside park featuring gardens, children's play area and scenic viewpoints.

Morning 09:00 am to Evening 05:00 pm.
